What Ohio Pet Parents Should Know Before Letting Their Pup Make a Splash
When summer hits in Ohio, many families head to the nearest lake, pond, or pet-friendly beach—and it’s only natural to want to bring your dog along. But before your pup jumps in, it’s important to understand the risks (and how to avoid them) when it comes to swimming in natural bodies of water.
At Healthy Pets of Ohio, we want your summer adventures to be safe, fun, and stress-free. Here’s what to know before you hit the water.
Water Safety 101: Not All Dogs Are Natural Swimmers
While some breeds love the water, not every dog is a confident swimmer. Always:
- Start in shallow water
- Never force your dog in
- Use a doggie life jacket, especially in deeper water or on boats
- Supervise them at all times—dogs can tire quickly without warning
Watch for Harmful Algae (Especially in Ohio Lakes and Ponds)
Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can be toxic to dogs if ingested—sometimes even fatal. These blooms are common in warm, stagnant waters during mid-to-late summer in Ohio.
Signs of toxic algae:
- Water that’s green, murky, or has a surface scum
- Foul or musty smell
- Dead fish or wildlife nearby
If your dog swims or drinks from a contaminated source, rinse them off immediately with clean water and call the nearest Healthy Pets of Ohio location.
Signs of Dehydration or Overheating
Dogs can overexert themselves quickly during summer play—especially in water where they may not feel how tired they’re getting.
Watch for:
- Heavy panting or drooling
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Gums that are bright red or sticky
- Trouble walking or standing
Provide shade, water breaks, and call your vet if symptoms persist.
Local Pet-Friendly Swim Spots (Ohio)
Looking for a safe splash zone? Here are a few local pet-approved spots:
- Prairie Oaks Metro Park (Darby Bend Lakes) – Designated dog swimming area
- Alum Creek Dog Park (Lewis Center) – Fenced area with lake access
- Buckeye Lake State Park – Leashed access in some areas (watch for algae advisories)
- Walnut Woods Dog Park (Groveport) – Dog pond and shaded trails
Always check local park rules and water advisories before heading out.
Stay Safe, Stay Cool
If your dog loves the water, great! Just be smart about where they swim, watch for warning signs, and keep a towel and water bottle handy for rinse-offs and rehydration.
